Recovery Day is a celebration and acknowledgment of the progress being made for those living with problematic substance use, along with being a supportive space for addressing mental health. It is a platform for which people of all ages and backgrounds can come together, share, learn and experience a sense of community.
Last year’s event was held virtually due to Covid-19 precautions, however, this year individuals from across BC were able to gather responsibly and experience this incredibly powerful event in person.
Pacifica Treatment Centre is dedicated to raising awareness about substance misuse and supporting all community members in the search for help. Recovery Day BC is an incredible example of positive community action and we want to do our part. Located in Vancouver, BC, Pacifica provides in-residence treatment and community-based services for individuals experiencing problematic substance use, in conjunction with concurrent mental health concerns and trauma.
Recovery Day BC, held annually on September 11th, hosts up to 20,000 people. The heart of this year’s event was at the intersection of 6th Street and 6th Avenue in New Westminster.
One of the main goals of the event is to educate and spread awareness about the stigmas surrounding substance misuse and mental health. The festival is comprised of many informational booths and displays that have been designed by incredible wellness organizations and other groups looking to help strengthen the cause.
Over the course of the event, attendees heard from a diverse group of people, each sharing very wide-ranging stories and insights. Substance misuse can manifest itself in many forms, with different substances – and as such, there were speakers advocating for each individual struggling with problematic substance use.
Mental health was an important part of the conversation and was rightfully highlighted throughout the event, with all sorts of personal stories and voices making themselves heard at the event. Recovery Day BC is a totally inclusive environment, with an emphasis on compassion and constructive support.
This event hosts its fair share of entertainment as well. Each year, there are stages set up to host live music performances that are free to attend, the grounds are typically lined with delicious food truck vendors, and you can browse stalls filled with artisan goods.
Your presence is the best way to show your support! The event is free to attend and has something to offer for everyone. Whether you have just recently experienced substance misuse or have been around it for years, this event is guaranteed to offer you valuable insights and a sense of community.
